Abstract:Due to the rapid development of science and technology and the globalization of world economy, intercultural communication between nations has become more and more frequent. English as a global language plays a significant role in intercultural communication. However, there are various varieties of English existing in the world like British English, American English, Canadian English, and Australian English and so on. They are different from each other in phonetics, vocabulary and grammar, which causes intercultural communication barriers in many aspects. This paper is an attempt to analyze intercultural communication barriers from the perspective of varieties of English and then offers some practical suggestions or measures for intercultural communication.
