Abstract：This essay primarily expounds the main content and historical background of Yan Fu’s theory of “Faithfulness, Smoothness, Elegance”, states its process of inheritance and development in Chinese translation history, and revaluates it from the perspective of other translation theories, such as Lu Xun’s and Qian Zhongshu’s. Through the comparison from horizontal and vertical aspects, the thesis illuminates the decisive influence of “Faithfulness, Smoothness, Elegance” theory to Chinese translation history, and its development direction in the future. We have found that the theory has occupied an important position in Chinese translation, and with the development of science, technology and language and globalization tendencey, translators should adopt “Faithfulness, Smoothness, Elegance” theory correctly and translate faithfully to the original texts.
