Abstract

Along with the trend of western industrialization and frequently communication in the field of economy, culture, and commercial trade, the increasing needs of international translation fueled the research on translation theories. Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence theory, as a solid foundation of the translation theory, has promoted the development of translation greatly in 1980s and still has impact on China today. The boom of Chinese contemporary cinema and rapid development of the film industry require highly-skilled translation to meet the intimate film exchanges, thus increasingly requires exquisite dubbing strategies. This essay takes the Harry Potter Series as an example, based on functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida, to discusses the difficulties on film dubbing and the application of functional equivalence theory to dubbed films so as to address the above difficulties; by that further explore the practical application in dubbing translation, analyzes the prerequisites, barriers and influencing factors contributing to a dubbing translation, and tentatively bring about strategies and approaches to reach qualified translated dubbing, so as to raises suggestions on dubbing translation of imported English-speaking films in the future.
