Abstract

With the frequent cross-cultural communication, truly understanding of the meaning of cultural-loaded words has played an important role in the process of C-E translation. As a part of language, cultural-loaded words are endowed with various cultural connotations and they are abundant in the novel：Fortress Besieged，one of the masterpieces of twentieth century literature. The present paper will give a brief introduction to the five types of cultural-loaded words and their characteristics respectively, and then try to analyze some C-E translation methods on cultural-loaded words. The first part will introduce the definition of cultural-loaded words and five main kinds of cultural-loaded words with their own characteristics in Fortress Besieged. Then, the paper will focus on five C-E translation strategies of cultural-loaded words in Fortress Besieged, such as, literal translation, transliteration, substitution, liberal translation and annotation. Finally, some related questions will be further explored in part three.
