Abstract

 Conceptual metaphor is closely related to human cognition and behavior. Under the guidance of the conceptual metaphor theory, this thesis analyzes the conceptual metaphors in Obama’s political speeches with examples from two inaugural addresses (2009/2013) and the state of union addresses (2010-2015) from three aspects of structural metaphor, orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor. Following the analysis are a further exploration of American background information in political, economic, social and cultural aspects hidden behind these conceptual metaphors and a discussion of their functions, aiming at helping audiences better understand the potential intentions of Obama’s speeches.
