Abstract: The thesis aims to find the translating strategies on Chinese dish names under Chinese and Western catering cultures. Because the development of Chinese and Western communication activities have become increasingly frequent, Chinese catering culture has been concerned widely. As the carrier of conveying information, accurate English translation of cuisine plays a crucial role in the dissemination of Chinese catering culture. The method of research is based on literature retrieval and comparison between Chinese and Western countries. The results show that great cultural differences between Chinese and Western language and ideas also exist, English translation of cuisine is still unable to overcome this obstacle completely. Furthermore, English translation of dish names is not only the linguistic level, but also the transformation of cultural level. The thesis that concludes the four translating approaches on the English translation of Chinese cuisine may help people to carry forward Chinese traditional catering culture.
