Abstract: This study aims to reveal the differences between English and Chinese taboos in order to raise readers’ awareness of the cultural causes rooted in those imparities. Numerical taboos are taken for example in particular. Meanwhile, great importance is attached to this study in that it helps to reduce linguistic errors made in inter-/intra-cultural communication. Comparison between English and Chinese numerical taboos gives rise to four aspects. The results show that religion, hierarchy, values, and customs are the main cultural roots causing differences.
