Abstract: This thesis focuses on metaphor translation of names in The Story of the Stone. The paper starts from researching names in the story, discovering name metaphor in this novel. Then according to methods of name translation such as transliteration, paraphrase and semantic translation, this study analyses Hawks’ name translation of main characters, servants, monks, and actress. On the basis of the analysis, this thesis evaluates advantages and disadvantages of Hawkes’ translation. The paper makes a conclusion that there is no name translation method that is perfect and successful name translation lies in mixing different ways together.
