Abstract

Recent years, with the development of film and TV series industry, the importance of subtitle translation becomes increasingly clear. Translation researchers and translators have paid more and more attention to this new field of translation. The quality of subtitle translation plays a significant role in audience’s understanding of the plot of the films and TV series and in promoting the development of subtitle translation and cultural transmission. On the basis of previous studies, this paper employs skopos theory to analyze the approaches to subtitle translation in the English TV series, Downton Abbey. This is not only conducive to the practical subtitle translation but also to the deepening of our understanding as well as the research of general theory.
